Moon’s Zen Moment…
As a Southern CA resident, it does not rain very often here. We get rain more frequently during the winter months. When rain comes during the drought months, it feels like a shower of gifts, like a starving person who receives food.
On a cold morning recently, as I was warm and cozy in bed under my goose comforters, I heard rain drops falling on my roof top, to which I paid close attention. When I got up to look out the window, there was a steady stream of drizzling rain. As I moved my face more closer to the window to focus on the rain drops, a profound sense of serenity set inside me. In that moment, I felt so connected to the Universe in the stillness and peace. That morning, I went out and took a walk in the rain to clear my mind and cleanse my soul.
In many religious traditions, water symbolizes spiritual cleansing and enlightening of our souls. John the Baptiste would stand in the lake while his followers would be dipped into the water. Other cultures perform rain dances in honor of the God who provided water for human survival. Needless to say, rain and water are the essence of life and one of the 4 important elements (fire, air, and earth being the other 3). Rain is mother nature’s way of cleansing its environment and giving life on Earth.
Since I was a teenager, I consistently dream about the ocean and the waves engulfing me or water caving in on the walls while I am asleep, so I know in my deep subconscious I have a fearful yet reverent relationship with water. However, on that cold morning, when I went out in the rain, it was a loving relationship. Being under the rain, I felt a cleansing and renewal of my mind and soul.
When we cleanse our souls, we cleanse our minds and bodies, and rain is a wonderful way the Universe shows us how to do so. So I am so grateful for the rare but precious rainy days — which brings me to my rainy Zen Moment…
